“Tonight San José became the first city in the United States to enact an ordinance to require gun owners to purchase liability insurance, and to invest funds generated from fees paid by gun owners into evidence-based initiatives to reduce gun violence and gun harm," Mayor Sam Liccardo's office said. The new ordinance is the first of its kind in the country and is reportedly designed to help curb gun violence in the city.

Governor Gavin Newsom rejected the decisions of the Board of Parole Hearings to grant parole to Sirhan Sirhan. “After decades in prison, he has failed to address the deficiencies that led him to assassinate Senator Kennedy. Mr. Sirhan lacks the insight that would prevent him from making the same types of dangerous decisions he made in the past,” said the governor.

The city of San Fransisco temporarily increased reinstated a universal indoor masking requirement. This will remove the exemption for the rule that was allowed for "stable groups of 100% fully vaccinated individuals in certain settings." New rules also require city employees to be fully vaccinated and boosted if operating in high-risk settings. Attendees of "indoor meg-events" will also require a booster shot, if eligible.

Citing Texas' abortion law, California Governor Gavin Newsom has directed his staff to collaborate with the legislature and attorney general to draft a bill that would allow private citizens to seek injunctive relief and statutory damages of at least $10,000 “against anyone who manufactures, distributes, or sells an assault weapon or ghost gun kit or parts in the State of California.”

California Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law a bill requiring large retailers to provide gender-neutral toy sections. Retailers may continue to offer other toys and childcare goods in traditional boys and girls sections. California became the first state in the nation to adopt such a law, which will take effect in 2024.

California Governor Gavin Newsom prevailed in a recall election finishing on September 14th. California voters were asked whether they wanted to removing the current governor and if they did they had a field of 46 replacement candidates to choose from. Larry Elder, the leading replacement candidate, conceded the race to Newsom the night of the election. Notably, Newsom could have been removed if a majority of voters voted to "yes" on the proposition to remove. If he was removed the replacement candidate with the most votes would replace him. Newsom needed to maintain majority support to keep his office while a replacement candidate only needed a plurality.
