The SAT announced that it will be transferring the test to a fully online format. This change will also include changes to make the test "more relevant" and a shortening of the total test to two hours from three hours. Calculators will also be allowed on the entire math section and the reading sections will be shorter with only one question each.

A new National Student Clearinghouse Research Center study found that 2020 and 2021 saw sharp declines in enrollment of 2.5% and 2.7% respectively. Public four year colleges saw a 3.8% drop in enrollment while community colleges saw a 3.4% decline.

According to the Labor Department, the U.S. economy added 194,000 jobs in September, a significantly slower pace than the 366,000 jobs in August. Employment particularly decreased among public schools, which lost 144,000 jobs nationwide.

Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor denied an emergency request from four teachers and teaching assistants to lift New York City's vaccine mandate for public school teachers and employees, allowing the requirement to remain in place. In late July, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that the City would require all public school teachers and employees to receive at least one dose or risk unpaid leave.

A CDC report found that schools were 3.5 times more likely to have COVID-19 outbreaks if they did not require masks at the start of the school year compared with schools that "required masking on day one." The CDC also found that counties that did not have mask requirements in schools had over double the rate of pediatric COVID-19 cases compared to counties without school mask requirements (34.85 cases per 100,000/day versus 16.32 cases per 100,000/day). A third report found that 96% of schools have been able to remain open for in person learning, despite the pandemic, through strategies of "layered prevention."

The Bureau of Labor Statistics has detailed the consumer price indexes for tuition and school related items going back to July of 2011. Among other conclusions, the bureau found that the price of college tuition has remained stable since September 2019, indicating a lack of movement since the beginning of the pandemic.
